Mad as a …

He hands her the box, she takes it and looks at it and then him.
Die: “Just open it.”
Lovett opens the box carefully and gasps as she pulls out a sky blue woolly hat with a large white bobble on the top.
Cut to the same safe house a while later; it is dark outside and the lights are on. Die and Lovett are still dressed as they were. Die is sitting at the glass table. His gun is in bits in front of him and he is carefully cleaning it. The four gun magazines are in a neat row on the table. His black knife is there too with a sharping stone next to it and his strange little black shoulder holster is also on the table as is a black padded looking long sleeve t-shirt. His small phone is next to him.
Lovett is ‘sitting’ upside down on the sofa; her head hanging over the edge of the seat, with her legs resting over the back, her feet (with the orange socks) are fidgeting. She is now wearing her bobble hat too and reading a book, it is Alice in Wonderland. Music is coming from the Naim Mu-so speaker; it is Vangelis’ Blade Runner album.
Lovett: “You always, have a copy of this in your suit case where ever you?”
Die: “Yep. It focuses my mind.” “I can’t believe you have never read it.”
Lovett: “I do feel a little like Alice right now.”
Die: “And that would make me?”
Lovett: “The Mad Hatter of course.”
Die: “I like that.”
She sits up pulling her legs down and sits on them and looks at him over the back of the sofa her chin resting on the back of it and her arms out holding the book.
Lovett: “If I die…”
Die: “Charlotte don’t…”
Lovett: “Just shut up and let me finish for once.”
Die: “Me? You’re the one that is always…”
Lovett: “Please! Just this once?”
Die puts down his now reassembled gun and looks at her.
Die: “Ok, get it off your chest.”
She looks down at her chest and back to him and grins; then looks serious.
Lovett: “If I should die, promise me you will come to my funeral and say something inappropriate.., I’d like someone I know well to be there.”
He puts the gun the table, stands and walks to the back of the sofa and crouches down, looking into her eyes close up.
Die: “I promise.” “How about ‘that coffin makes her bum look big.’?-”
They laugh.
Lovett: “Perfect.”
His phone buzzes on the table he stands and walks back to the table saying.
Die: “As long you promise to do the same for me.”
Lovett: “Ok, I promise.” “‘Die died dying from dying to be a hero?’”
Die: “Needs a little work.”
He looks at his phone.
Die: “ A text from Harry. They are on their way here now. Something must have happened.”
Lovett lifts the book and reads aloud.
Lovett: “The rabbit-hole went straight on like a tunnel for some way, and then dipped suddenly down…”
The door to the apartment opens and Harry, who is carry her large brief case, and Alpha-Three walk in.
Lovett: “ I see no one in SIS ever knocks!”
Harry goes to the speaker and turns the music off.
Alpha-Three: “He has changed the day of the ransom drop.”
Die: “I thought he might. When is it now.”
Alpha-Three: “Tonight.”
Lovett: “Oh shit no.”
Alpha-Three: “Detective, please go to your bedroom with Harry. She has somethings for you.
Lovett: “Why?”
Alpha-Three: “Your captain did inform me that you were not good at following orders. That stops now. Go please.”
Lovett: “But…”
Harry grabs Lovett by the arm and half drags her up to her feet..
Lovett: “Ok. Ok. Calm down Black Widow, I’m coming.”
They both go into the bedroom and close the door.
Die: “That is not going to go well.” … “Her going is a bad idea sir.”
Alpha-Three: “Yes is it. But it was your idea to try and recruit her Six-Seven.”
Die: “I know but…”
Alpha-Three: “But she is brave, quick and smart and she has you to look out for her, if she will let you. So that is the end of argument ok?”
Die is taking his shirt off and struggling into the black padded bullet proof t-shirt
Die: “Yes sir” “Shame her face is all over the internet too; she’ll be better off not knowing we were going to ask her to join us.”
Alpha-Three: “Agreed.” “About you’re early retirement…”
Die: “It’s ok, I’ll survive…”
Alpha-Three: “Doubtful, but I am working on an alternative.”
Die: “What alternat…”
The bedroom opens and Harry is pushed out.
Harry: “Such a fuss!”
Lovett: “I can dress myself! And why are your hands so bloody cold Missy?”
Lovett is dressed in all black. Black DM boots, black combat trousers, a tight fitting black padded bullet proof long sleeved t-shirt like Dies and a thick black belt and her sky blue bobble hat. She is stretching and pulling at the t-shirt.
Lovett: “You wear this all the time?”
Die: “You get used to it.”
Lovett: “I won’t.” “But I do love this belt… look!”
She turns round and the back of the belt has three sturdy metal clips; clipped into each one is a black tactical baton. She reaches round and pulls one out in each hand leaving the middle one and extends them; they are silent as the extend.
She turn and expertly waves and turns them about in the air, just missing Harry’s head a few times; Harry flinches and moves away.
Lovett: “Do I get to keep these?”
Die snorts a laugh as puts his shirt back on and start putting his stuff back into the shoulder holster.
Alpha-Three: “Yes Detective you can; they are… made of a different metal than your normal ones and they retract with the button too.
Lovett presses the button and they retract.
Lovett: “Cool as shi…”
Alpha-Three: “Your records show you are not fire arms trained, as yet, so I thought these might make you… feel better.”
Lovett puts then back on the belt clips.
Lovett: “Thanks you.”
Lovett pokes her tongue out at Die.
Lovett: “I have gadgets!” …
He poke his tongue at her as he is putting on his restocked shoulder holster.
Lovett: “So, where are we going, so this nut jobs can kill us then?”
Die, Alpha-Three and Harry all look at her with their eyebrows raised.
Lovett: “What?”
Fade to black.
Gary Numan sing from “I am Screaming.”
You’re welcome to sing with me
You’re welcome to sing alone
You’re welcome to die with me
You’re welcome
Fade from black to the inside of a helicopter. Lovett and Die are in the back they both have on head sets and mics, Lovett is now wearing her red coat and Die His black suit. Lovett is hold a big black hold all bag. We hear them talking over the radio head mics.
Lovett: “Why Essex of all places?”
Die: “He knows it will take time for other agents to get here. He told us to use this ‘copter so he knows we’re coming. ”
Lovett: “But Essex!”
Die: “You’ve never been to anywhere in Essex have you?”
Lovett: “I went to Southend as a kid once with my bucket and spade, does that count?”
Die: “Nearly.”
Another voice comes on the radio.
Pilot: “We’re nearing the given drop point Six-Seven.”
Die: “Thanks Eight-One. Lovett, give me the bag; when this thing lands follow me quickly, keep your head down and run with me until it takes off again, got that?”
Lovett: “Got it.”

The gift of the hat always makes me smile, the characters gain so much depth from that one act. The dialogue as always is perfectly done-it feels natural and real, and the descriptions bring a sense of their world into my mind’s eye without a bit of disbelief. Simply brilliant. ❤
