Black screen with white text ‘With a Wink of Her Eye’; we hear Lovett and Die talking.
Die: “Who the hell still goes into banks now days?
The white text fades just leaving a black screen.
Lovett: “Me, I don’t trust the internet with my money, it could all just disappear.”
Die: “But you are drawing money out; what’s wrong with the cash machine?”
Fade from black to Lovett and Die walking up the steps to a big bank with two large wooden doors. Lovett is wearing her big red coat, blue jeans and purple DM’s. Die is in his black suit, white shirt and sky blue tie.
Lovett: “I like dealing face to face with people.”
Die: “But…”
Lovett: “You don’t have to come with me you know!”
Die: “I’m really bored, we haven’t done anything for ages; so I will.”
Lovett: “Shut – up – then.”
The drums from the start of Ballroom Blitz by Sweet start to play and cut to Lovett and Die getting in the queue and the camera slowly pans around the bank and the people in it.
We focus on a tall man with a black bag as Brian Connolly sings
-“Are you ready Steve? Uh-huh”-
Then another man with a black bag
-“Andy? Yeah”-
Then another man with a black bag
-“Mick? Okay” “Alright fellas, let’s go!”-
The song kicks in full.
We pan round at other people there is a man and woman mid-twenties each is carrying a guitar case.
-“Oh it’s been getting so hard”-
A young looking woman bank teller behind the counter, she is serving a big bald man.
-“Living with the things you do to me”-
A woman, late thirties with a little girl about seven, the girl wearing a blue and white gingham dress and red shoes.
-“My dreams are getting so strange”-
A male bank teller just standing about doing nothing.
-“I’d like to tell you everything I see”-
An older woman with a large shopping bag on wheels.
-“Oh, I see a man in the back as a matter of fact”-
There is a man all in black (at the back) he has red rimed eyes from a cold and is holding a handkerchief and he also has a black bag.
-“His eyes was as red as the sun”-
In the corner by the doors is a woman in a long black tight fitting coat sitting in a chair she also has a black bag.
-“And the girl in the corner that no one ignores”-
Die sees the woman and she sees him. She winks at him.
-“’Cause she thinks she’s the passionate one”-
Lovett is looking around and squinting and getting suspicious at the men with black bags. She elbows Die and slightly nods to the man in black.
-“Oh yeah!”-
The older woman, just in front, looks up at Die and smiles at him.
-“It was like lightning”-
Die smiles back
-“Everybody was frightening”-
…and then Die starts subtly looking round too; as we pan around some more.
-“And the music was soothing”-
The couple with the guitar cases move forward in the queue. There is an old man in front of them he has two walking sticks helping him walk in an odd shuffling dance.
-“And they all started grooving”-
Die looks at Lovett and taps under his left arm so Lovett sees:
-“Yeah, yeah,”-
Lovett shakes her head.
-“yeah-yeah-yeah”-
And she reaches inside her coat and hands him one of her batons.
-“And the man in the back said, “Everyone attack””-
The man in black with the handkerchief (at the back) shouts.
Man in black: “NOW!”
-“And it turned into a ballroom blitz”-
All the men with black bags pull out guns of different types and we see woman on the chair slowly stands up, her right hand goes inside her the left side of her coat.
-“And the girl in the corner said, “Boy I want to warn you”-
Man in black: “Everyone on the floor!”
-“It’ll turn into a ballroom blitz”-
Man in black “NOW!”
-“Ballroom blitz, ballroom blitz,”-
The customers and tellers in shock move slowly to lie down.
-“ ballroom blitz…”
Die and Lovett move to attack. Die looks at Steve we zoom into the revolver Steven is holding… there are no bullets in the wheel.
“…ballroom blitz”-
Cut to Die hitting the arm of ‘Steve’ with the baton, Steve drops his guns yelling in pain. Die kicks him in the left knee and Steven goes down.
-“Oh reaching out for something”-
Lovett has both of her other batons out and heads fast to Andy. Andy is wide month as she comes at him. He pulls the trigger of his gun but it just clicks.
-“Touching nothing’s all I ever do”-
Lovett cracks Andy across both sides of the head with both batons in a crossing scissor motion he falls to the floor out cold.
-“Oh I softly call you over”-
Mick is also in shock and just stands staring at Die.
-“Then you appear there’s nothing left of you”-
Die spins right round and back handed hits Mick in the throat with his baton; Mick drops his gun and clutches at his neck choking falling to his knees.
-“And the man in the back is ready to crack”-
The man in black has a sawn off shotgun and he points at Lovett as she moves towards him.
-“As he raises his hands to the sky”-
Man in black: “Stop!”
Die is also moving towards him his hand going inside to the left side of his jacket for his gun.
-“And the girl in the corner is everyone’s mourner”-
Lovett turns to look at Die but sees the woman from the corner behind Die
-“She could kill you with a wink of her eye”-
The woman from the corner winks at Lovett and hits Die hard on the back of the head with the butt of her hand gun (a Beretta 92). Die goes down to his knees.
-“Oh yeah! It was electric”-
Lovett goes to move towards the woman.
-“So frantically hectic”-
The woman from the corner; points her gun at Lovett’s face. Lovett stops.
-“And the band started leaving”-
The couple with the guitar cases make a break for the door.
-“’Cause they all stopped breathing”-
The man in black shouts
-“Yeah, yeah, yeah-yeah-yeah”-
Man in black: “Stop them!”
-“And the man in the back said, “Everyone attack””-
Steve is back on his feet his gun in his other hand and stands between the guitar couple and the door with his gun up.
-“And it turned into a ballroom blitz”-
Lovett is rising her hands the batons still a in each hand.
-“And the girl in the corner said, “Boy I want to warn you””_
Die tries to stand
-“It’ll turn into a ballroom blitz”-
…but the woman from the corner kicks him in the side of the head and he goes down fully.
-“Ballroom blitz”-
Lovett goes for the woman from the corner again but the man in black grabs her round the neck from behind, they struggle.
-“Oh yeah! It was like lightning”-
The women bank tellers hits a button under her desk…
-“Everybody was frightening-“
…and alarms and sirens start to go off.
-“And the music was soothing”-
The man in black is shocked by the alarms
-“And they all started grooving”-
…and Lovett drops one of her batons and grabs his arm holding the gun and twists it, moving round and to the side at the same times pull his arm the wrong way.
-“Yeah, yeah…”-
There is a cracking noise from the man in black’s arm
-“yeah-yeah-yeah”-
Man in black: “Get this bitch!”
-“And the man in the back said, “Everyone attack””-
The woman from the corner grabs the little seven year old girl by the hair
-“And it turned into a ballroom blitz-“
She drags the little girl to stand
-“And the girl in the corner said,”-
…and points her gun at the girls head and winks at Lovett.
-“Boy I want to warn you”-
Lovett and the woman stare hard at each other.
-“It’ll turn into a ballroom blitz”-
Lovett lets the man in black go as Die (who is lying on the floor) make a grabs for the woman from the corner’s foot with his left hand pulling out his gun with his right. The woman kicks Die in his head with her other foot and he passes out and his gun spins a little on the floor.
-“Ballroom blitz…”-
Lovett goes to make a move but this time the man in black is ready and hits her hard across her back with the shot gun in his good arm and she goes down on all fours in pain.
-“ballroom blitz,..”-
Mick stands, still holding his neck and coughing and moves fast to Die and kicks him in the stomach.
-“…ballroom blitz, ballroom blitz”-
The woman lets go of the little girl
-“It’s, it’s a ballroom blitz”-
The woman grabs Die’s gun from the floor
-“It’s, it’s a ballroom blitz”-
She goes over to the bank teller that hit the button
-“It’s, it’s a ballroom blitz”-
And she points Die’s gun into the tellers face.
-“Yeah, it’s a ballroom blitz-“
Corner woman: “Turn that off now, I warn you!”
The teller moves and turns a switch and the alarms and sirens stop the woman from the corner winks at the teller.
High shot of the scene with Die out cold on the floor Lovett is on all fours and all the customers and tellers on the floor too.
And the song ‘Ballroom Blitz’ fades out.
The robbers, apart from Andy (who is on the floor out cold) stand looking round.
Man in back: “Shit!”
There is the noise of police car sirens from far away outside.
The Woman: “Get those doors locked up!”
Steve closes the doors and bolts them top and bottom and then goes to his bag and pulls out a large ringed metal chain and a padlock; he goes to the door handles and locks them up with them.
The woman looks at Mick.
The Woman: “Get those people out from behind the counter and then check the office see if anyone is there.”
The man in black moves and kneels next to Lovett, his shot gun pointing at her; Lovett is getting something from one of her coat pockets.
Man in Black: “What do you think you are doing!?”
Lovett pulls out her ID and arrest card and holds it up; she is still on all fours (well threes) and in pain…
Lovett: “Detective Inspector Lovett, metropolitan police. You’re all under arrest. Come quietly and we might not give you bastards a good kicking.”
The Man in Black: “A copper! Genevieve, you hear this! A bloody copper!”
The woman, Genevieve, spins round pointing Die’s gun at the man in black’s head. Die’s gun is in her right hand and her own Beretta 92 is in her left hand.
Genevieve: “Yes I heard! As did everyone else hear you use my name! Brian!… I am wondering if I am a good enough shot to hit your tiny brain as it rattles around in your thick skull!”
Brian looks angry and embarrassed.
Genevieve: “It doesn’t matter now anyway… Plan B gentlemen.”
The men, apart from Andy who is still out cold, reach into their pockets and pull out ammunition for their guns and load them, they were all empty until now.
Die groans quietly and moves slightly.
Lovett: “Die?”
Die doesn’t answer but Genevieve moves her aim to point Die’s gun at Die.
Genevieve: “Die, is it?”
Die looks up slightly, squinting in pain as he sees Genevieve standing above him holding his gun and pointing it at him.
Die: “Mum? Is that you? Five more minutes?”
Genevieve: “Oh, he is a funny boy is he?”
Lovett: “No, he is a bloody idiot.”
Genevieve glares at Lovett and then at Brian.
Genevieve: “Get her and the rest into the back and sit them in a circle on the floor…”
She raises her voice so everyone can hear her clearly.
Genevieve: “… and if any of them plays the hero… kill them!”
Genevieve looks into Lovett’s eyes; they both stare hard at each other as Brian grabs Lovett and pulls her to her feet.
Brian: “Move it you… you lot heard the lady into the back now!”
Brian looks back at Genevieve as he moves Lovett to the back of the bank.
Brian: “What about Andy?”
Genevieve: “Does it look like he is going anywhere?”
Brian turns and pushes Lovett towards the back of the bank as Steve is pushing other people to the back as well.
Brian: “Move ‘Detective’.”
Die is still lying on the floor facedown but he lifts his head in time to see Genevieve undoing her long black coat is waves about her like a cape for a second but she doesn’t take it off. She is wearing a black knee length pencil skirt, a white blouse and high heeled black shoes. She is also wearing a tan coloured leather shoulder holster. The gun holster on her left side is empty but there are two bullet mags’ in holders on her right side. She looks into Die’s eyes pointing his gun between his eyes and without looking or the gun moving from its target she places her Beretta 92 expertly into the empty holster on her left side with her left hand. Die groans and slowly rolls onto his back.
Die: “Oh great.”
Die looks up at Genevieve, seeing her upside down; he moves his eyes up her legs and body into her eyes.
Genevieve: “Enjoying the view?”
Die: “It’s a bit blurry still. Would mind coming closer?”
Genevieve: “I have a feeling you are a dangerous man to get close to.”
Die: “Me? I’m a pussy cat.”
Genevieve: “Exactly. Cute, but deadly with it.”
Die: “Cute?”
Genevieve frowns and slowly walks round him to look at his face the right way up; the gun never wavers from pointing at his head.
Genevieve: “I know your face.”
Die: “I just have one of those faces…”
Genevieve: “Hardly.” … “Oh God! You are that disgraced British spy that was pictured shooting Sir Martin Bannered, aren’t you?”
Die groans
Die: “That was all just a misunderstanding…”
Genevieve: “I’m sure it was. So the girl is the arresting officer?” “Are you two…?”
Die: “We work together, now and again.”
Genevieve: “Nice work if you can get it!” “Hand over the spare clips you have for this gun, please.”
Die: “You know I can’t do…”
Genevieve pulls the hammer back on Die’s gun.
Genevieve: “I could kill her first if you like?”
Die slowly sits up.
Die: “That would be a very big mistake.”
Genevieve: “Brian is dying to see what sort of a mess his gun would make of a human head… you’re call, Die.”
Die: “Alright; here.”
Dies puts his left hand into his jacket.
Genevieve: “Slow-ly.”
Die pulls out the three clips and slides them on the floor to her feet. Elegantly she crouches and picks them and puts them in her coat pocket. Still crouching she looks deep into Die’s eye for a moment.
Genevieve: “Interesting.”
Die: “So what happens now?”
Genevieve stands up again.
Genevieve: “Plan B is what happens now, as you and Miss Riding-Hood buggered up plan A.”
Die: “Why were the guns empty?”
Genevieve: “Plan A didn’t involve anyone getting killed. Plan B on the other hand…” “I can’t lie to you about your chances, but… you have my sympathies.”
Genevieve winks at Die.
Genevieve: “Up you get ‘Cutie Die’, time you joined the others.”
Die groans and rubs his head as he stands slowly.
Die: “Why is it, that lately, every time I meet a beautiful woman, I end up getting hit unconscious?”
Genevieve: “You just have one of those faces. Come on ‘Hero’, let’s go.”
Die starts rubbing his head and to walk slowly toward the back of the bank.
Cut to: All the hostages are sitting of the floor in a circle (apart from Die) Lovett is sitting next to the older woman with the shopping bag on wheels which is next to her. Lovett is looking around trying to see Die.
Woman: “What’s your name dear?”
Lovett looks at the woman.
Lovett: “Detec… I mean Charlotte. But everyone calls me Lovett.”
The woman holds out her hand to shake hands, Lovett slowly takes it and shakes it.
Woman: “I’m Sigourney…”
Lovett frowns as she takes her hand back.
Sigourney: “Sigourney Lambert; most people just call mum to be honest.”
Lovett: “Nice to meet you, Sigourney.”
Sigourney: “You were very brave.”
Lovett: “I was too slow I’m afraid.”
Sigourney: “You did your best, that’s what counts.”
Lovett looks a bit disdainful at this.
Sigourney: “Do you think we will be here long?”
Lovett is looking around trying to see Die again.
Lovett: “I hope not.”
Lovett looks back at Sigourney.
Lovett: “But it could be a while.”
Sigourney: “Oh not too long I hope; Jonesy gets grumpy if his dinner is late.”
Lovett: “Your husband?”
Sigourney laughs.
Sigourney: “Oh bless you, no…”
Sigourney puts a hand in her coat pocket and pulls out a small photograph.
Sigourney: “He’s my cat.”
Sigourney holds up the photograph. It is of a big ginger tom with a nasty scar right across the right side of his face and through his right eye. Lovett is a bit taken a back.
Lovett: “He is very… handsome.”
Sigourney: “He is a bastard, but I love him. A bit like you and your young man I think.”
Sigourney nods towards Die as he walks to the group while rubbing his head. Lovett looks at him and then back to Sigourney shocked.
Lovett: “Young… What!? No, no ,no. Me and him aren’t…”
Sigourney: “Of course not. What was I thinking?”
Sigourney grins as Die sits down next to Lovett on the other side to Sigourney. Lovett looks at him.
Lovett: “How deep?”
Die without a word reaches over with his right hand and gently squeezes Lovett’s nose. Lovett in a nasally voice, as he holds her nose.
Lovett: “Oh no, not again?”
Die lets her nose go and nods and Sigourney gently coughs.
Sigourney: “Of course not. Silly me.”
Sigourney smiles a big smile.
Die: “What have you got on you?”
Lovett: “I have one of my old batons in my boot but that’s it. They didn’t even take my phone.” “You?”
Die: “They didn’t take mine either; I don’t think they care but I still have my spare clip on my ankle.” … “These guys are amateurs.”
Lovett nods at Genevieve who is whispering to Brain as they look at his phone.
Lovett: “She isn’t.”
Die: “No, she isn’t, but she isn’t that clever, I still have my knife.”
Genevieve looks over at Die and points his gun at Lovett not him.
Genevieve: “Mr Secret Agent Man. Would you mind sliding your pretty black knife over here…? Please.”
All the hostages are looking at Die with open mouths.
Die: “I don’t have a knife…”
Brian turns his phone to face Die, there is a picture from episode one of Lovett standing behind Die with a police officer holding each of his arms. Lovett is holding a slim black knife.
Brian: “Don’t muck about.”
Genevieve: “Isn’t the internet wonderful? Agent Die, I limit myself to asking ‘please’ only three times in one day; you are now on the second, don’t waste the third.”
Genevieve’s grip on his gun tightens and she aims better at Lovett.
Die: “Oh, that knife!”
Die move his right arm behind and up the back of his jacket.
Genevieve: “Slowly. We don’t want any accidents do we?”
Genevieve moves her eyes to look into Lovett’s eyes and Genevieve winks at Lovett.
Die slowly brings the knife out and slides it across the floor to Brian.
Genevieve: “Good boy.” “Now the rest of you, if you do as you are told and do nothing stupid we should be out of here very soon.”
There is a groaning sound from the front of the bank.
Genevieve: “Seems Andy is awake… He is not going to be happy. I better have a word before he… thinks of something interesting to do to the Detective.”
Genevieve moves away to the front of the bank. Mick and Brian stand guard over the hostages.
Lovett slowly turns to look at Die.
Lovett: “Oh yeah, she isn’t clever at all, is she?… you prat.”
Brian is holding Die’s knife and looking at it intently, turning it over in his hands.
Brian: “Oi, Austin Powers! What’s this knife made of?”
Die: “Cheese.”
Brian: “I hope she lets me kill you.”
Die: “Not sure she thinks you’re man enough Brian. Can’t say I blame her.”
Brian is angry and turns to go the front of the bank.
Brian: “I will have you shit head.”
He walks off.
Lovett –whispers-: “What is wrong with you?”
Die-whispers- “What?”
Lovett: “Are you trying to piss them off?”
Die: “Yes.”
Lovett stares long and hard into Die’s eyes.
Lovett: “This is what you were like before… before you met me isn’t it?”
Die: “They’re idiots and careless, it’s to our advantage.”
Lovett: “What is the advantage to you being shot in the head?”
Die: “They won’t do anything without her so say.”
The young woman bank teller leans over at this point and talks to Die.
Woman bank teller: “Excuse me?”
Lovett and Die both turn to look at her.
Woman bank teller: “Is it true? About you being a… secret agent?”
Die opens his mouth to speak but Lovett gets in first.
Lovett: “Yes it is. But he is crap at the secret bit. And I’m not too sure about the Agent bit either. ”
Woman bank teller: “So… we’ll be safe then? With him here, I mean?”
Die: “Perfectly.”
Sigourney stifles a snort of a laugh.
Lovett: “Something wrong Sigourney?”
Die: “Sigourney? Really?”
Sigourney: “No dear, I’m fine. I was just wondering if the pretty young lady has seen any Bond films, that’s all.”
Loud angry shouting comes from the front of the bank. All the hostages turn to look where it is coming from. It is Genevieve and she very angry.
Genevieve: “I said NO! You are here to open the safe! I don’t care what she did to you! If you can’t open the safe say so now, so I can shoot you where you stand Andy!”
Lovett turns to Die.
Lovett: “I never asked before but do you have to write a report for every bullet your gun fires?”
Die: “Technically yes; but they never know how many bullets I have to begin with, so they’ve never asked for one… thankfully.”
Steve walks up holding his gun on a middle age, very tall, thin, man with receding hair. The man is wearing a pin stripe grey suit that has a wet patch in the front of his trousers.
Steve: “Sit down there… Mister Wellbore.”
Mick: “Who’s this streak of piss?”
Steve: “This is Mister Wellbore, the bank manager. I found him under his desk. He’s wet himself the brave little soldier.”
Mick: “Oh a real streak of piss!”
Mick and Steven laugh.
Everyone looks at Mr Wellbore. The two people either side of him where he has sat down move slightly away from him.
Genevieve appears again and is looking a little flustered.
Genevieve: “Steve, empty the counter cash draws of any notes you can find and bag them up.”
Steven: “Sure thing.”
Genevieve undoes the top two buttons of her blouse and looks at Die and tries to look and sound sweet and seductive…
Genevieve: “Oh cutie Die, Would you, come, with me for a moment?”
Die: “I am quite comfortable…”
Genevieve points Die’s gun at Lovett.
Die: “…going anywhere with you, my darling Genevieve.”
Genevieve: “Good boy.”
Genevieve turns and walks away without even making sure Die is following her. Die goes to stand and Lovett grabs his arm and whispers to him.
Lovett: “Be careful.”
Die-whispering back-: “Hey, it’s me.”
Lovett: “Yeah, that’s what worries me.”
Die stands and walks off; as he gets close to Steve, who hasn’t moved to the counters yet, Steve say to him.
Steven: “I owe you Die.”
Die: “Oh, I only take cash, no cards. When you’re ready… Steve.”
And Die walks off after Genevieve
Lovett: “Oh for god’s sake. Is this what he is like when he is bored?!”
Sigourney: “I think that, that Miss Genevieve is going to keep him entertained.”
Lovett glares at Sigourney.
Sigourney: “Sorry dear. Just me thinking out loud.” “Would you like a mint?”
Lovett: “Yes. Please.”
Cut to black.
Fade from black to Die entering the bank manager’s office. The office is four meters by three with no windows and there is a desk opposite the door. As Die closes the door behind him Genevieve is sitting on the edge of the desk facing him (she still wearing her coat) she is touching up her red lipstick and Die’s gun is on the desk on her right side. Genevieve puts the lid on to the lipstick puts it into her pocket and picks up the gun and looks at Die.
Genevieve: “I thought we’d better have a little chat.”
Die: “Another? I’m not sure you’d like anything I have to say.”
Genevieve points the gun at Die.
Genevieve: “Then, you should be quiet and listen to what I have to say.”
Die: “As you wish.”
Genevieve: “My associate is not best pleased that he was so easily taken down by a girl and he is itching for a rematch. I will do me utmost to prevent this but… if it should happen it would be for the best, for you and her, that you do not get involved.”
Die: “First off; She is a woman not a girl. Second; Andy… should be grateful that Lovett was in a hurry. She is not shy about kicking a man while he is down. Thirdly; She rarely needs me to get involved and lastly but by no means least…
Die looks Genevieve slowly up and down.
Die: “…You and I need a rematch at some point too.”
Genevieve reaches up with her left hand and undoes two more buttons of her blouse; her peach coloured bra is clearly visible now. She opens her legs wider.
Genevieve: “Come here Die.”
Die moves slowly towards her, his eyes locked on to hers. He gets very close to her, standing between her legs; he doesn’t flinch when the barrel of his gun that Genevieve is holding presses against his crotch. Their faces are very close and Genevieve tilts her head slightly to her right and leans in as if to kiss Die on the lips but she kisses the left side for his white shirt collar leaving a very clear red lipstick mark. She leans back slightly and pulls the hammer of the gun back, its clicking noise is the only sound we here. They look into each other’s eyes for a moment. Zoom in for a close up of their faces their lips are barely 10cm apart and Genevieve chest is press against Dies
Genevieve: “She doesn’t know does she?”
Die: “There is very little Lovett doesn’t know.”
Genevieve: “She doesn’t know that you… are hopelessly in love with her.”
Die: “I am hopeless at a lot of things.”
Genevieve: “No. You are as insane as it possible for a sane man to get.”
Cut to the door opening and Andy sticking his round the door.
Andy: “I’m nearly…”
He is taken aback by what he sees. Die and Genevieve have not moved at all. Andy’s face hardens.
Andy: “… ready.”
Genevieve slowly moves her head to her left looking over Die’s shoulder and look at Andy.
Genevieve: “Good. I will be there when I am finished here.”
Andy: “But…”
Genevieve: “When I am finished here.”
Andy nods, leaves and closes the door. Genevieve looks back at Die.
Genevieve: “I had a proposal for you.”
Die: “Sorry, I’m not the marring type.”
Genevieve: “I was going to ask you to join us. I could use a man like you.”
Die looks down at Genevieve chest and then back to her eyes.
Die: “’Use’ is the important word in that sentence isn’t it?”
Genevieve: “We are about to make a lot of money. Enough for all of us, including you, to retire in a hot sunny place in peace and comfort for the rest of our lives.”
Die: “I have all the peace and comfort I can stand thank you.”
Genevieve moves in towards him and gently touches his lips with her lips and whispers.
Genevieve: “Pity.”
Die-also whispers-: “Wrong time.”
Genevieve: “Wrong place.”
Genevieve straightens up and pushes Die back with her left hand.
Genevieve: “Your place is back with the others now.”
Die: “You are as close to sane as an insane woman can get.”
Genevieve: “You have no idea.” “Move now please, cutie Die.”
Die turns and moves towards the door.
Genevieve: “I would have been worth it you know?”
Die: “I know… But my hopelessness beats your proposal, I’m afraid.”
Genevieve: “You are an idiot.”
Die: “I hear that a lot.”
Genevieve messes up her hair with her left hand as they leave the room; cut to black.
We hear Brian Connolly sing;
-“And the girl in the corner is everyone’s mourner”-
-“She could kill you with a wink of her eye”-
Fade from black to Die followed Genevieve, who is pointing the gun at him, coming back to where the hostages are sitting on the floor. Sigourney is handing round POLO mints and Lovett looks up as Die approaches there is a questioning look on her face that changes to anger when she spots the lipstick on Die’s collar. Die Sit down on Lovett’s right again. Sigourney leads over to him and quietly say (this bit is mostly the hostages talking quietly).
Sigourney: “Mint dear?”
Die: “Thank you Sigourney. Please call me Die.”
As Die reaches over and take a mint Lovett touches the lipstick mark on his collar with her right forefinger and thumb and rubs them together not taking her eye off of him. Die doesn’t react to her touch or looks. Lovett looks up at Genevieve who is making a little too much fuss about straightening out her hair. Genevieve sees Lovett looking at her and Genevieve fakes surprise at her blouse being so undone and winks at Lovett as she does the lower two buttons back up. Lovett is furious. And quietly to Die says.
Lovett: “Had a nice little chat, did we?”
Die is looking at the faces of the hostages and doesn’t look at Lovett.
Die: “There were a couple of interesting points.”
Lovett looks back at Genevieve who is pulling at the front of her blouse to get it comfortable again.
Lovett: “I think I can see both of them!”
Die: “The scent of her breath for one thing.”
Lovett looks at Die furiously.
Die leans forward to Mr Wellbore and quietly says.
Die: “Mister Wellbore, what is so special about your safe here?”
Wellbore is shaking and fidgeting with his hands. He is a very frightened man and he is also a very bad liar.
Wellbore: “No…nothing. Nothing at all. All very ordinary.”
Female Teller: “Yeah right. It is never open and doesn’t seem to be for our customers at all!”
Wellbore: “Miss Little it might be if you shut up.”
Die: “When was the last building work carried out.”
Miss Little: “Last month, for a week.”
Wellbore: “Miss Little!”
Miss Little: “Stuff it Bore, I resign.”
Die: “Mr Wellbore you don’t just work for this bank do you?”
Wellbore: “What? I… I…”
Die: “At a guess I would say, the Home Office?”
Lovett: “Die, what you getting at?”
Die –to Wellbore-: “This is a B B repository isn’t it?”
Wellbore looks up at Die a look of total shock on his face.
Lovett: “B B?”
Die-to Lovett-“Bearer Bonds.”
Lovett: “I thought they didn’t exist anymore?”
Die: “Mostly they don’t but governments all over the world still use them for… diplomatic payments. The secret service use them a lot for pay offs.”
Lovett –to Wellbore_: “Well? Is that what this is about?”
Wellbore: “I…I don’t know what you are talking about!”
Die: “Wellbore how much is in the vault?”
Wellbore: “You’re going to get us killed!”
Miss Little leans across and slaps Wellbore across his face hard.
Miss Little: “Bastard! Why didn’t they ask you to open the safe?”
Lovett: “Good question. Well?”
Wellbore: “I can’t. it is only opened remotely and only at high level Home Office request.”
Die: “They know a way Wellbore that’s why they didn’t bother with you. What’s wrong with the vault?”
Wellbore is close to tears
Wellbore: “I can’t tell you I signed the official secrets act!”
Lovett: “The official secrets act is a law not a contract you idiot doesn’t matter if you sign or not but he is with the Secret Intelligence Service.”
Wellbore: “I can’t…”
Die: “Mr Wellbore my boss is known as Alpha-Three, she is the head of Section-Omega. Even working in the Home Office I know you have heard of us.”
Mr Wellbore: “Oh god no! You’re one of the S-O’s WAIFs! You are going to get us killed! Everyone around you dies!”
Die: “Wellbore listen…”
Lovett: “What’s a waif?”
Wellbore: “Bloody, mad Section-Omega! The suicidal last resort; they are all insane. I heard of the things your lot do!”
Die: “How much is in there Wellbore!?”
Wellbore: “Th… thirty billion pounds.”
Lovett: “How much?!”
Die: “What denominations?”
Wellbore: “We only have the five hundred thousands.”
Lovett and Miss little: “Shit.”
Lovett: “Is that pounds?”
Wellbore: “Euros.”
Lovett hits Die in the arm to get his attention.
Lovett: “What does waif mean?”
Die: “It something that Alpha-Three dislikes, you must never to say it in front of her ok?”
Lovett; “I won’t if I know it means!”
Die: “It stands for ‘When All Is Fucked’.”
Lovett: “Oh god and I thought a copper’s sense of humour was bad. That is terrible.”
Die: “It goes back to the second world war.”
Die looks over to Sigourney’s shopping bag on wheels.
Die: “That bag could hold over a billion pounds.”
Lovett: “And they know how to open the safe?” “Wellbore what’s wrong with the safe?”
Wellbore: “Design flaw. It is sensitive to high voltages.”
Die: “I wonder what equipment they left when posing as the work men?”
There is a loud coughing noise. It is Genevieve, she is coughing violently, she has a hand in one of her pockets looking for something and Brian rushes over to her with a small bottle of water. Genevieve fishes out a small bottle of pills from her coat pocket and takes two pills and Genevieve pushes Brian away.
Genevieve: “I’m fine! Get on with your part of the plan!”
Lovett looks at Die with distain on her face.
Lovett: “And you kissed that did you?”
Before Die can say anything Sigourney pipes in
Sigourney: “Of course he didn’t, he has too much to lose. That woman is playing with you dear.”
Genevieve is moving away back towards where the safe is and Andy and her coughing is ringing out loud.
Sigourney: “Lung cancer would be my guess; there is a certain sound to the cough.”
Lovett and die look at Sigourney
Die: “And a smell to the breath.”
Sigourney: “Yes, yes indeed.”
Lovett: “Oh…”
Lovett reaches up and gently wipes the small trace of red lip stick from Die’s lips.
Lovett: “… I’m still going to nail her arse.”
Die looks at Lovett and raises an eyebrow. Lovett playfully hits him in the chest.
Lovett: “Not like that you pervert.”
Die: “Shame.”
Sigourney: “Little rascal.”
Sigourney laughs a very dirty laugh and all the hostages and Lovett and Die look at her and smile… apart from Wellbore.
Cut to back.

This episode is so well done, from the song, to the extra characters, to the tiny details and references, that I keep trying to think of how to best represent it with art, and come up short every time. ❤
